The Voice

Came across this poem while looking at my Twitter feed. I love Shel Silverstein, and I love that all of his poems were lessons for life. I remember writing to him in 4th grade and him sending me back a signed bookmark. Ah great memories!

I especially love this poem because It embodies everything I strive to achieve on a daily, and moment to moment basis, in my life and with those that I work with (in sport and in my clinical setting). To learn to trust yourself. To learn to decipher your minds’ and bodys’ urgings and the messages. To listen to the voice inside of you that always wants what is best for you.

This becomes a challenging feat when we realize that many of the negative messages that run across our minds were not initially “put” there by us. Often they were told to us at some point in our lives when we were vulnerable enough to mistakenly believe it as truth. Well it’s not, and once you become aware of it you can choose to create your own truth. Building the foundation of your life on the messages/beliefs/voices that empower you to believe that you are worth it, loveable, and powerful enough to choose the life you want, not the fragile, worthless, hopelessly blaming one that you were made to believe.

Listen to your voice and remember thoughts become things.
